I'm a former Brooklyn prosecutor, and I publish my prices because most people in this situation just want a straight answer. Here's what these cases cost, what you should get for the money, and when paying a lawyer isn't worth it.
How much do NYC pink summons lawyers charge?
Almost every lawyer who handles pink summonses charges a flat fee, not an hourly rate. That's a good thing for you: you know the cost up front, and it doesn't grow if the courtroom runs late.
Here's what the market looks like:
Regular criminal defense lawyers usually charge $500 to $1,000 for a pink summons. That's a big reason you rarely see a published price: you'll see "affordable flat fee" or "call for a quote," and you won't know the number until you're on the phone.
Summons-focused firms usually start at $500 for a personal summons.
SummonsPros is $350 flat for Manhattan and Brooklyn, and the price is published.
If a lawyer quotes you an hourly rate for a single personal pink summons, ask for a flat fee instead.
What should a flat fee include?
The price only means something if you know what it covers. A fair flat fee for a personal pink summons should include:
A review of your summons and your situation before anything is filed.
Filing a notice of appearance so the lawyer is on record for you.
An attorney appearing on your case and resolving it.
Telling you the outcome and what, if anything, you need to do next.
Then ask about the things that commonly cost extra:
Trial. Flat fees cover resolving the case, not taking it to trial. A trial costs considerably more.
Additional court dates. Ask what happens, and what it costs, if the case isn't resolved on the first date.
Borough. Some cases are heard in courthouses that take more time and travel.
An existing warrant. A missed court date adds work.
A court date that's days away. Rush handling can carry a fee.
A good lawyer will tell you all of this before you hire them, not after.
What does SummonsPros charge?
Here's the full list, the same one on our home page:
Personal pink summonses in Manhattan and Brooklyn: $350 flat, no hourly billing. The fee covers resolving your summons by appearing in Court on your behalf.
Cases in Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx: $150 surcharge. Those cases are heard in regular criminal court parts rather than a dedicated summons part, which means more time and travel.
Cases already in bench warrant status: $150 surcharge.
Court date within 48 hours: a $100 expedited handling fee may apply.
Multiple appearances or trial: additional charges apply.
Trucking summonses: from $495, with multiple summonses from the same stop bundled at a discount. FDNY fire code summonses: from $750. Other business matters are quoted individually.
We also guarantee the lowest price in NYC: we'll match any competitor's advertised rate on our $350 base fee. The add-ons above still apply.

What are you actually paying for?
When you hire a private summons lawyer, you're mostly paying for three things:
Not going to court. On most personal pink summonses, a lawyer can appear for you with the judge's permission. No morning off work and no waiting in a courtroom. There are occasional exceptions, and a good lawyer will tell you about them before you hire them.
Preparation. Your lawyer reviews your summons and your situation before the court date, not in a hallway that morning.
Experience. Someone who knows the summons courtrooms, the prosecutors and the realistic outcomes, and who is focused on getting you the cleanest result available.
What about pleading guilty by mail?
For two charges, open container (public consumption of alcohol) and public urination, the court lets you plead guilty by mail through its MySummons page, as long as you weren't given any other summons at the same time. The court gives you 60 days to pay the fine.
It's the cheapest path, and for some people it's fine. But be clear about what it is: a guilty plea. You give up any chance of a dismissal. If a clean outcome matters to you, for a job, a license or immigration, talk to a lawyer before you mail anything.
When is a lawyer worth the money?
A private lawyer is usually worth it when:
Missing work costs you more than the fee. A morning in court, plus travel, plus the chance of coming back, adds up fast.
You live outside New York. Flying back for a summons rarely makes sense. Here's how to handle a NYC pink summons from out of state.
You already missed your date. A warrant changes the stakes, and you want it handled now.
You're not a U.S. citizen. You want someone thinking through the consequences before any plea.
The summons was issued to your business. More on that below.
Why do business summonses cost more?
Because the rules are different. The court's Summons FAQs say that if a summons is issued to a corporation, an LLC or a limited partnership, you must retain an attorney, and the attorney must be present at every appearance. Trucking and FDNY summonses are also more involved, and FDNY fire code summonses are heard in Criminal Court, not OATH.
Common questions about pink summons lawyer fees
Is the court fine included in the lawyer's fee?
No. Legal fees and court fines are separate. If your outcome includes a fine, you pay it to the court.
Will it cost more if I already missed my court date?
At SummonsPros, yes: cases already in bench warrant status carry a $150 surcharge. The court's official guidance says a warrant can only be cleared/vacated by a defendant's appearance before a judge. In practice, on summons cases, some judges will vacate the warrant with only your lawyer present, and some will insist on seeing you. If it's possible to get it done without you being there, we will get it done. More on what happens if you ignore a pink summons.
What if my case isn't resolved on the first court date?
Trials and multiple appearances incur an additional charge.
Does paying more get a better result?
Not necessarily. No lawyer can guarantee an outcome, and anyone who promises one is overselling. What you're paying for is experience, preparation and, in most cases, not having to be there.
The bottom line
A private NYC pink summons lawyer usually costs $500 to $1,000, and most won't tell you the price until you call. Look for a published flat fee with every add-on disclosed up front, and a lawyer who can go to court for you.
